Wildlife Management Areas in Tanzania
A Community Wildlife Management Area (WMA)is a community-based conservation approach inTanzania that emerged during the reform process in the 1990s. The system enables communities to manage and fully benefit from wildlife on their land by devolving responsibilities and promoting conservation management at the village level. Each WMA can encompass multiple villages, as these WMAs often cover extensive geographic areas. A village, in this context, represents a community consisting of approximately 500 to 3,000 residents.
