In July 2025, CWMAC, together with the Honeyguide Foundation and Techno Environment, piloted an innovative online database at WAGA Wildlife Management Area in Mufindi under the EU-funded KUWA Project. Designed to capture key data on patrols, incidents, training, and community engagement, the system addresses long-standing challenges of delayed reporting and inconsistent paper-based records.

Over several days, WMA staff, Village Game Scouts, and project experts tested the platform with real field data, entering information, generating reports, and providing feedback. The exercise confirmed that the system functions reliably under field conditions and can integrate spatial data for more informed decision-making. It also highlighted minor refinements needed, ensuring the platform meets operational realities before scaling to other WMAs.

The pilot’s impact went beyond technical validation. Staff gained confidence using digital tools, strengthening transparency, accountability, and the ability to make data-driven conservation decisions. By enabling timely access to accurate information, the database positions WMAs to manage wildlife and resources more effectively while amplifying community benefits.

With lessons learned and final adjustments underway, this system promises a transformative step for Tanzania’s community-managed conservation areas—turning data into actionable insights that strengthen governance, empower local communities, and ensure wildlife thrives alongside people.
